One Step Closer to the Cake
Our medical packets came yesterday, finally. I went to the clinic on campus to investigate how much money we'd have to hand over for all of this stuff and apparently it doesn't cost a dime. I made an appointment for my eye exam on Monday and one for my phsycial on Wednesday. I have no idea who long it takes for test results to come back, but I can't imagine it taking more than 2 weeks. This whole dental business I know will cost plenty because we have no insurance through our university and apparently the advice they gave me at the clinic was to look in the Yellow Pages and choose a Chinese dentist- because they're cheaper. We'll see how that works.
I'm not too happy about this whole having to get two pairs of glasses ordeal, it seems rather expensive. I'm down to my last month supply of contact lenses and am debating on whether or not I should refill the prescription or if I should just start wearing those glasses. Well, I guess they will make me look smarter. That's always a plus. On the other hand, my step-mother and brother got laser eye surgery, why can't I? I'll have to look into that next time I'm in Colombia.

I actually served myself a glass of wine and sat down with the medical packet and read its contents- page by page. It was like a celebration because we're one step closer to the cake. One we actually get there it's going to taste like a piece of heaven, I just know it.
I'm not sure how long it takes to get medically cleared but my estimate is around 2 months or so after they recieve the documents. I'm assuming they will get to ours relatively quickly as our departure date is early summer.
But we'll see about that. Peace Corps is full of surprises. I've got a 50cent bet going with Will about our Peace Corps destination.

Hey, Will & Andriana! (Sorry if I spelled those wrong...I´m doing it from memory.) Anyway, it sounds like you could possibly be coming here to El Salvador!! The Youth Program here is brand new (I´m in the first group for it) and the municipal development group comes in each year in early June. (Youth volunteers will be phased in with each training cycle.) Anyway, it would be so great to have you here!! It sounds like you guys are definitely peace corps material from what I could gather from the little I read on your blog. So...if you have any questions, feel free to email me at michellegullett@gmail.com. I can give you the low-down on stuff. And I saw your eye glass dilemma. The problem with contacts is that the water here is not good. And many times, there is no water. So it makes contacts difficult to handle. (Also, there´s all the dust and dirt that´s blowing around since all the roads aren´t paved.) But, if you guys are coming in in the muni program, you´ll probably have a pretty urban site. There is one married couple that came in with my group. I can give you their contact info if you´re interested in contacting them. Congrats on the nomination!! I remember the feeling...I´m sure you´re ECSTATIC!! :) -Michelle
Hi there! Thanks for the info! It would be so cool if El Salvador is where we end up going. It's actually the only country in Latin America I've been able to read about that has the programs we were nominated for AND for the date we were given.
I don't want to get my hopes up yet, as we haven't even had our medical exams, but I will definately keep reading your blog, as well as another blog I found by a volunteer which you probably know (Tara) who I think is a Muni volunteer just in case we do end up in El Salvador next June. In that case, I'd be great to get in contact with a couple who is already there.
Thanks again for the info!
cheers!
