The Wish List: New Things, New Places

Since I've had heaps of free time since my 1-month stint working at the breakfast-centred food establishment in the city and the absence of income flowing into my bank account, I've began to create a list of places I'd like to do when my current circumstances reverse themselves.

I've been reading heaps about food, trying to learn more about wine and get the lowdown on new places in the food scene around Melbourne. So far, two places stand out:

Borscht, Vodka & Tears

Apparently this Polish-style drinking establishment on Chapel street has over 100 different types of vodka to sample from. Being the vodka enthusiast that I am, this place is a match made in heaven, as they say. After almost 2 years in this city, how could I have not heard of a place like this that stays open until 3am? One review says to " [e]xpect candles, soft gypsy music and plenty of punchy booze". A definite must-try in the upcoming months!

Mi Corazón
This Mexican eatery just recently opened on the Brunswick-end of Lygon street, so there isn't much information on the Internet. Melbourne simply doesn't have enough Mexican restaurants where one can enjoy authentic-tasty food at affordable prices. I think that it's for the same reason that the large population of Asians in Australia reflects the large number of Asian eateries. I've passed by a place called Blue Corn, I believe, in St. Kilda I think it was and I just laughed when I had a look at the prices. Mexican food is good, but in all honesty it's not known for being a fine dinning cuisine. I will have to make a mental note to visit the Mexican places in Fitzroy to make a final judgement. I lived in Mexico for 2 years as a child and my step-mother is also Mexican, so I'm rather unforgiving when it comes to giving my opinion on Mexican restaurants. Sorry Taco Bill, you simply don't make the cut.

Borsch, Vodka and Tears is definitely worth a visit! Ideally on a cold night so you can stuff yourself with vegetarian pierogis.

Blue Corn is on my wishlist at the moment. Closer to home, you might consider paying Los Amates a visit (on Johnston St, Fitzroy). I've really enjoyed my couple visits there, but I'm less experienced in the delights of authentic Mexican food.

Hmmm, that name sounds familiar. I'm sure I've walked by Los Amates a few times without paying any notice to it. I'll check it out!

Mmmmm, vodka and pierogis.

You must try the honey vodka at Borscht, Vodka & Tears - it rocks! The place is open for breakfast too, though to experience the wonderful ambience, it is best done at night in candlelight.

And I can second Los Amates. They do a rockin' mole there.
