A Day in the Life Of an Entry-Level Receptionist
Wow. It's amazing how unexciting ones life can get in a matter of days! I went from fending off flesh-eating mosquitos and gastro-intestinal bacterial infections in crazy El Salvador to sitting at a desk from 8:30am to 5:00pm doing receptionist duties. This is one of the consequences for choosing not to do Peace Corps at this time, I tell myself.
Step 1 - arrive at office, sit down at desk, confirm interviews for the day
Step 2 - check voice mail and take action as needed
Step 3 - log on to company email account and take note of applicants information who have applied for job positions
Step 4 - log on to web-based job search website, search resumes for potential candidates and take notes (also known as internet recruiting)
Step 5 - spend rest of day answer phones, greeting clients and calling potential candidates who's resumes fit in with the available job positions.
Step 6 - leave office
Step 7 - repeat steps 1-6
I'll be honest, I hate step 5. I wouldn't hate it so much if it wasn't such a BIG part of my job. Normally, when a company is looking for potential employees they place ads in the paper and online and if people are interested, then they apply. THIS company, however, depends heavily upon internet recruiting.
I knew that when I accepted the job, but I didn't know that they were going to be so adament about needing to book a certain number of interview each day or else. I could really care less about the bonus I get for booking a certain number of interviews.
I wonder how much time I have to give it before I can tell my boss that the way that she is telling me to do things in unfortunately not the best way to go about doing things?
The bathroom is not the cleanest, they have dial up internet, there is one computer for the whole office, there isn't any handsoap in the bathroom and everyone shares the same phone line. As long as I get my paycheck...
I think I might be older than my boss. Geez.
